Auditions: South Devon Players, TOADS Stage Musical and Shiphay

So now you have Christmas and the New Year firmly behind you, it must be time to consider what to do with 2013…

There is plenty of am dram to be getting stuck into in South Devon, and whilst yesterday I was able to trail workshop auditions for the Playgoers of Dartington Hall, today I find there are more auditions out there that might tempt the budding thespians, particularly those looking to try something new.

Shiphay Amateur Dramatic Society – Monday 14 January 2013

The Shiphay Amateur Dramatic Society in Torquay will be staging ‘Dick Barton – Special Agent’ on 14 to 16 March 2013. Written by Phil Willmott and based on the BBC radio serial, Dick Barton aims to rid the world of evil in the name of decency and patriotism.

There will be auditions for this ‘musical comedy’ held on Monday 14 January 2013 at St John’s Church Hall, Cadewell Lane, Torquay at 7.30pm. New members are always welcome both on stage and behind the scenes.

12221_10151318940050379_248901393_nSouth Devon Players – Wednesday 23 January 2013

The South Devon Players are an award-winning non-profit community theatre company that bring to life the history and legends of the county of Devon, in newly researched and written shows. They will be holding open auditions for ‘The Ballad of Resurrection Bob,’ in a piece of theatre that tells the story of Brixham’s most notorious and inventive smuggler.

It is said that Bob once faked his own death in order to transport contraband to Totnes in a coffin, right under the noses of the coastguards. That same night, encountering Bob on the highway, the coastguards were convinced that they had seen a ghost. From this escapade Bob earned his nickname ‘Resurrection Bob’.

For those looking for a taste of the story, you need look no further than an episode of ‘Escape to the Country,’ being broadcast on BBC1 at 2.15pm on Wednesday 16 January 2013, when some members of the group will be displaying their talents.

If you’re over 16 and fancy joining this happy band of players, experience is not an issue, all they ask is for is commitment and the ability to function in a hard-working friendly team!

The performances will take place in late April and early May 2013. Auditions will be held at the Chestnut Heights Community Centre, Brixham, with the doors open at 7pm. After the play has been cast, rehearsals will start the following Wednesday at the same times and last between two to two and half hours.

I’ve enjoyed several years of performing am dram in half empty venues. I’ve read plenty of reviews crushing months of hard work for productions across Devon written by people who don’t like theatre anyway. I want to redress the balance, by seeing things both amateur and professional and telling you why I’ve enjoyed them.
