PREVIEW: The Ballad of Resurrection Bob – The South Devon Players

South Devon Players - Resurrection BobThe Jolly Lion has received a news release from the South Devon Players giving a bit of information about their forthcoming production, ‘The Ballad of Resurrection Bob’:

“In past centuries, smuggling of silks, tobacco and brandy was rife along the coasts of the Southwest, and the smugglers invented ever more creative tactics to evade the law.

In the case of “Resurrection” Bob Elliott, he faked his own death in order to transport contraband to Totnes, under the noses of the coastguards, in a very large coffin. Later that night, the story tells, the local coastguards encountered Bob on the highway, and were convinced that they had seen a ghost. From this escapade, Bob earned his nickname of “Resurrection Bob”.

The Smugglers Hotel, in Brixham town centre, is said to have been where Bob lived, at the time of the escapade, and indeed, that is how the hotel earned its name.

In the summer of 2012 The South Devon Players were filmed for a BBC 2 programme, performing a clip of their upcoming 2013 production The Ballad Of Resurrection Bob, the humourous true story of a 19th century smuggler, in the Devon fishing port of  Brixham, where the theatre company is based.

This award-winning non-profit community theatre company primarily specialises in bringing to life the history and legends of the county of Devon, in newly researched and written shows. We mainly specialise in shows about local history, but sometimes expand to wider historical events as well. We are family friendly, lively and welcoming to all who wish to be involved in theatre at any level. In the past, members have gone on to perform in major feature films, and train at RADA. Our membership ranges from age 10 to 65, and from professional performers to complete beginners, all of whom work as part of a team to create new exciting shows which are then brought to our local community.”

There are two performances on Saturday 27 April 2013 – matinee and evening at the Christian Community Centre, Fore Street (town centre), Brixham. Tickets cost £4 / £2.50 concessions. For the matinee doors open 3pm with the show at 3.30pm. In the evening doors open 7pm with the show at 7.30pm.

The Great Gale of Brixham 1866 – The South Devon Players

Have you ever turned on to a soap at a time of great tragedy? That moment that a plane crashes on the village of Emmerdale or a tram comes off the rail onto Coronation Street that sees a spike in the viewing figures of a television audience.

People who tune in to the big disaster plots will see people they are unfamiliar with gathering in a pub, sharing brandy to steady nerves and handing out blankets to those suffering. Viewers find themselves greeted by a community of devastated people pulling together and supporting each other.

The South Devon Players present ‘The Great Gale of Brixham 1866′ and do so from the reactions of those gathered in the pub. This one act play, produced and directed by Laura Jury, is based around historical records of the gale, bringing a true tale of tragedy, community and hope to a Brixham audience. It served as a reminder of how the fishing industry has been crucial to the economy of the town in the past, but that the same dangers remain today.

With just forty minutes to tell the story, we were given a snapshot of the lives of Brixham residents, some based on fact, others created to drive on the plot, but serving to deliver the action by the reactions of residents.

There were strong performances from David Jackson as James Milton, the coastguard leading the rescue efforts and Louise German, who played Mrs Brucknell, who had a harrowing emotional scene discovering her husband has been lost in the bay.

I was also impressed by Lorraine Saunders as Ruth and Lindsay Coope as Maria, who set the scene nicely before the gale shook the town and gave simple characters that you could care about when the bad news started coming in.

Not a lot to be cheerful about, but an important form of community theatre delivered by people who care about the subject matter and using drama and song to remind us of this small, but important turning point in the history of Brixham.

The Great Gale of Brixham 1866 will be presented again at the Baptist Church Hall, Winner Street, Paignton on Saturday 14 April at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £3 for adults and £2 for the under 16s.
